The northern pike is a fearsome apex predator of northern lakes and rivers, known for its explosive strikes and toothy grin. These ambush predators can grow to enormous sizes and provide heart-stopping action on both conventional and fly tackle. Pike tournaments are popular across the northern tier states, with catch-and-release practices helping maintain healthy populations of trophy fish.
Weedy bays, river backwaters, and shallow flats in lakes and reservoirs. Prefer cooler water temperatures (55-75°F). Found near vegetation, fallen trees, and other ambush points.

Northern pike can accelerate to speeds of up to 25 mph in short bursts, making them one of the fastest freshwater predators. They have been known to attack ducklings and muskrats.
