About Crappie

Crappie (both black and white species) are among the most popular panfish in America and have developed a dedicated tournament following. These schooling fish are known for their paper-thin mouths and delicate bites, earning them the nickname 'papermouth.' Crappie tournaments have grown enormously in recent years, with dedicated circuits across the South and Midwest. Their sweet, mild-flavored meat makes them one of the best-eating freshwater fish.

Habitat & Environment

Lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and ponds. Found near brush piles, standing timber, docks, and bridge pilings. Move shallow in spring to spawn and retreat to deeper structure in summer and winter.

World Record

5 lbs 7 oz (Black Crappie - Lionel Ferguson, Richeison Pond, TN, 2018)

Did You Know?

A single female crappie can produce up to 140,000 eggs in a single spawn. Crappie are one of the few fish species where the male guards the nest.
